UK Bass is a music genre that originated in the United Kingdom

UK Bass is a music genre that originated in the United Kingdom, specifically from the fusion of various electronic dance music styles such as dubstep, UK garage and grime. The genre is characterised by heavy basslines, complex rhythms and intricate percussion.

UK bass has had a significant impact on the global music scene. The genre's popularity has spread beyond the UK and has become a staple of electronic music festivals and club scenes worldwide. Artists such as Skrillex, Diplo and Major Lazer have incorporated UK Bass elements into their music, helping to popularise the genre and introduce it to new audiences.

UK Bass has also influenced the development of other genres such as trap, future bass and bass house. Many of these genres share the same characteristics as UK Bass, including heavy basslines and intricate percussion patterns. In addition to its musical influence, UK Bass has also played a significant role in shaping youth culture in the UK. The genre's roots in urban music scenes, particularly in London, have made it part of the country's cultural identity. Overall, UK Bass has had a profound impact on the global music scene and continues to influence the development of new genres and subcultures. Its unique sound and cultural significance have made it an essential part of the UK's musical heritage. One of the defining characteristics of UK Bass is its complex rhythms and percussion patterns. UK Bass tracks often take elements from different genres, such as garage, dubstep and jungle, and blend them together to create a unique sound.

Rhythms in UK Bass are characterised by syncopated and off-beat patterns, with an emphasis on the "swing" or "shuffle" of the groove. This is often achieved by using drum machines and software to create intricate drum patterns, as well as incorporating live instruments such as percussion or bass guitar. Another notable aspect of UK bass is the use of polyrhythms and syncopation to create a sense of tension and release in the music. This can be seen in the way the percussion elements interact with each other, creating a dynamic and unpredictable feel to the rhythm.

UK bass producers often experiment with tempo changes and time signatures, adding further complexity to their tracks. For example, some tracks may start at a slower tempo and gradually build to a faster tempo, or switch between time signatures to create a sense of unpredictability and excitement. Overall, the rhythmic complexity of UK bass is a key element of the genre's sound and has influenced other genres such as future garage and bassline. The cultural heritage of DNB

Drum and bass (DNB) has its roots in the cultural heritage of the UK, particularly in London, where it emerged in the mid-1990s as an evolution of the earlier jungle and rave scenes. There are several cultural influences that have contributed to the development of drum and bass in the UK:

Sound system culture: Drum and bass has its roots in the sound system culture of Jamaica, where music was played through large outdoor sound systems at street parties and other events. This culture was brought to the UK by Jamaican immigrants and later adopted by young British people.

UK rave scene: The UK rave scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s was a major influence on the development of drum and bass. Rave music was typically fast-paced and electronic, with heavy basslines and a focus on danceability.

Sampling culture: Drum and bass is heavily influenced by sampling, the practice of taking short snippets of music from existing recordings and incorporating them into new compositions. This culture of borrowing and re-using music is a hallmark of electronic dance music in the UK.

Urban culture: Drum and bass emerged from the UK's urban environment, particularly London, where many of the genre's early pioneers were based. The music reflects the energy, diversity and intensity of the city and its people.

DIY ethos: Drum and bass has a strong DIY ethos, with many artists producing and releasing their own music independently. This culture of self-reliance and independence has helped to sustain the genre and keep it authentic.

Focus is the sophomore EP by Jon1st & Shield.

Jon1st & Shield have had a busy few years since the release of their debut single Holla in 2018, followed by their debut EP Flapjacks. They've been honing their craft and exploring their sound, with much of their growth taking place through their live performances for their growing global fanbase. Recordings of their performances are available on their website, with the Remote Research video being a good example.

Jon1st and Shield's approach to making music has changed significantly since their first collaborative EP and single 'Holla'. After the release of their first EP, they developed their live show and started touring, which influenced the way they approached their next set of tracks. Their initial approach to performance involved deconstructing their studio tracks to perform them live, but they later incorporated performance into the core of the track-writing process. Another key difference is that while their previous music was mostly written in person together, the majority of their new EP was created remotely online.

The majority of their new EP, Focus, was written by bouncing ideas back and forth online throughout 2020 due to the pandemic. They wanted to put performance at the heart of the writing process, so there's a lot more live percussion and scratching on this record than before. The duo come up with a core song idea and then see how many different ways they can take it in the studio using different hardware and DJ equipment.
