It is characterised by fast breakbeats and heavy bass lines, and often incorporates elements of jazz, funk and soul music. Subgenres such as liquid funk, jungle and neurofunk have developed over the years.

Drum and bass has a dedicated following and is often played at clubs and festivals around the world. To produce drum and bass music you need a digital audio workstation (DAW), a drum machine and synthesizers. The typical production process is to create a drum pattern and add bass lines, samples and other elements to create a coherent track.


It is a genre that is influenced from various music styles. Other genres such as dubstep and grime have also been influenced. Goldie, Roni Size, Andy C and Noisia are some popular drum and bass producers and DJs.


There were several important Drum and Bass DJs in the world in the 90s, including


1. LTJ Bukem - a British DJ and producer who is considered one of the pioneers of drum and bass. He founded the Good Looking Records label and helped popularise the subgenre of liquid funk.

The 20s (2020s) have only just begun, so it is difficult to say who will become a major drum and bass DJ in this decade. However, there are several DJs and producers who have already made significant contributions to the genre and may continue to do so in the coming years:
